Mahan nearly matches tour earnings in silly season
Hunter Mahan played 27 times on the PGA Tour this year and earned just over $2.2 million. He nearly made that much money playing just twice during the silly season.Mahan won’t get a trophy or official recognition, but he won the “money title” during the 2008 silly season with $1.995 million. Mahan won the Kiwi Challenge, then tied for third in the Chevron World Challenge. That’s enough money in two tournaments to have finished 39th on the PGA Tour money list.

Tour looking for site, sponsor for next-to-last event
Dates and sites for five of the six Fall Series events on the PGA Tour were announced Tuesday, but the next-to-last event of the season remains without a sponsor or home.The six events, plus the Presidents Cup, will begin Oct. 1 and will complete the PGA Tour season. It starts with the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Vernon, N.Y., takes one week off for the Presidents Cup, then goes to Las Vegas for the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Fifteen make Masters based on year-end ranking
Richard Sterne won the South African Open Championship on Sunday -- his second victory in as many weeks -- and climbed 31 spots to No. 43 in the world rankings. More than that, Sterne earned an automatic invitation to the Masters by moving into the top 50 in the last rankings of the year. Fourteen more players not otherwise exempt -- those in the top 50 without spots in the field already -- also earned invitations to Augusta.

Westwood leads SA Open
Lee Westwood will take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the South African Open and is hoping to become only the seventh foreign winner of the championship.The European Ryder Cup star posted a third round of 68 for a total of 14 under par, with Ireland's Gareth Maybin and Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera his nearest challengers on 12 under.

Sterne pips Rock to Dunhill title
Richard Sterne shot a final-round 69 to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa by one stroke. England's Robert Rock carded a 70 to finish in a tie for second with Sweden's Johan Edfors in the European Tour event at Leopard Creek.

America to reveal Ryder Cup captain
The PGA of America are today set to announce their Ryder Cup captain for the defence of the trophy at Celtic Manor in Wales in 2010, with Corey Pavin the firm favourite to land the role. The 49-year-old Californian, who will have a tough act to follow in Paul Azinger, was last involved in the match as one of Tom Lehman's assistants in the crushing defeat in Ireland four years ago.
