Toby Gibson, who refereed a number of title fights during a 25-year career as a boxing official, died Monday at his home. He was 61.
Gibson was found by his wife, Barbara, in the garage of their home, according to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The cause of death is pending.
Gibson most recently worked two bouts on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton-Paulie Malignaggi fight last Saturday in Las Vegas. Next on his schedule was a bout on the undercard of the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight Dec. 6.
"The entire boxing community is saddened," fellow referee and close friend Jay Nady said Tuesday, according to the Review-Journal. "He was a wonderful man. He was always making people laugh, and he had a big heart. His was the shoulder everyone leaned on and laid their burdens on."
